Sir,

REGE 30 MAR 07.

Downing Street, London,

15th August, 1902.

I have the honour to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of the 30th April, No. 939, respecting the price at which certain disinfectants could be supplied from England.

2.

We have made exhaustive enquiry into the matter and we find that some of the disinfectants can apparently be bought more cheaply in Hongkong than in England.

3.

The relative prices in Hongkong are approximately as follows:-

Local Through C. A. Jeyes Fluid 3/11 3/8 Chloride of Lime (Japanese) 13/3 15/- Carbolacene 2/8 3/10 Carbolic Acid 3/3 2/11 Sulphuric Acid 1/9 5/2

4.

It will be seen that a substantial saving could be effected by giving the orders for the Carbolacene and Carbolic Acid in this country.

5.

I would point out that Jeyes fluid can be diluted to almost any extent and that when bought in cases it is singularly exposed to fraud of this description. We know that we buy the fluid on exceptionally favourable terms and we are therefore driven to the conclusion that what is bought as "Jeyes Fluid" in Hongkong differs in the material point of strength from what we ship.

The Honourable

The Colonial Secretary.

A.
